Skin Grafting

Skin grafting is a very common plastic surgery procedure which involves transplantation of skin. Skin grafting / flap is an excellent tool to treat non healing ulcers and complicated defects after trauma, infection, burns or carcinoma and prove to be problem solving procedure.

This surgery is done under general anesthesia; however minor skin grafting can be carried out under local anesthesia on outdoor basis.

In this procedure, superficial layer of skin is taken from one part of body (generally from the concealed areas like thighs or buttocks) and transplanted to the recipient area. The skin graft is secured with the help of sterile dressing usually for 7 to 14 days. The donor area heals at its own.

Most of the people require a split-thickness skin graft whereas some may need a full-thickness skin graft or flap (skin and other tissues with blood vessels) to cover the complex defects.
