Female to Male Gender Reassignment

Gender Reassignment Surgery (Female to Male)

If a girl feels emotionally like a boy, she may be having Gender Identity Disorder / Gender Dysphoria. In this, a female feels that she is a boy trapped in a female body. This can be corrected successfully with Gender Affirmation Surgery, also called as Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) or simply a sex change operation. Before these procedures the candidate needs to be evaluated by our team including psychologist and endocrinologist.

This involves various surgical procedures to make you a complete male. These are:

Breast Surgery also known as Top Surgery – Involves removal of the breasts and shaping of chest to achieve well contoured male chest with minimum scarring.

Procedure: Done with tumescent liposuction technique the fat and gland is removed with thin instruments passed through key holes with no visible marks. In large breasts a procedure may be needed to remove extra skin simultaneously or preferably at a later stage. This may result in two horizontal scars on the lower aspect of chest.

Duration of Procedure: 1 – 2 hrs. You may go home on the same day, though if you wish you may stay overnight.
Anesthesia: General or local with sedation.
Recovery Time: Back to work in 2 – 5 days. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 4 – 6 weeks. You may need to wear a pressure garment for 2 to 4 weeks.

Genital Surgery – This includes:

1. Hysterectomy with or without bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and vaginectomy

2. Genital reconstruction (penis reconstruction / phalloplasty with scrotal reconstruction)

Hysterectomy is the removal of uterus. Bilateral salpingo – oophorectomy (BSO) is the removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes. Vaginectomy is removal / obliteration of vagina. These procedures are done endoscopically and leave no scars.

Duration of Procedure: 2 to 4 hrs. You may need a stay of 1 to 2 days.
Anesthesia: General
Recovery Time: 2 to 5 days

Genital reconstruction (penis reconstruction / phalloplasty with scrotal reconstruction)
This is a staged procedure usually requiring two to three procedures about 6 to 9 months apart.

Stage1: Usually free flaps are taken from other part of body (most commonly from forearm) using the nerves and vessels to make it an erogenous and sensate penis.
Duration of Procedure: 7 to 10 hrs. You will need stay of about 10 to 14 days
Anesthesia: General
Recovery Time: 10 to 20 days

Stage 2 : A penile implant is inserted to make the penis erectile. This is usually done once the reconstructed penis gains all sensations (about 6 to 9 months after stage one).
Duration of Procedure: 1 to 2 hrs. You will need stay of about 1 to 3 days
Anesthesia: General / Local with sedation
Recovery Time: 5 to 7 days

Stage 3 : This involves scrotal / testicular reconstruction. The labia majora skin is used for scrotal reconstruction and testicular implants are used for testes to give natural looking scrotum.
Procedure: 1 to 2 hrs. You may go home same day.
Anesthesia: General / Local with sedation
Recovery Time: 5 to 7 days
