Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast Reduction Surgery / (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Disproportionately large breasts are not only cosmetically unpleasing, but also are a constant source of physical discomfort like neck pain, shoulder pain, maceration of under breast skin. Severe psychological and social embarrassments, inability to wear fitting clothes are some other issues which can’t be ignored. Larger heavy breasts are difficult to assess for lumps and swellings thus making detection of cancer difficult.

Purpose:

  • To make the breasts smaller, firmer and more proportionate to the rest of the body
  • To get relief in uncomfortable symptoms often associated with large breasts e.g. shoulder pain, back pain, crease infectionetc.

There is evidence that breast reduction may reduce the individual risk of breast cancer owing to overall reduction of breast volume. Breast feeding potential is maintained after breast reduction.

Procedure: With meticulous preoperative planning and accurate measurements, markings are done with patient in sitting position. This aims to put the nipple areola in perfect position along with proper assessment of the desired volume to be removed. The technique depends on the existing breast size, volume of the breast to be removed and the sagging of the skin to be corrected. The preferred technique is vertical shortest scar technique and may be combined with liposuction of adjacent areas to give overall good shape to the breasts.

Breast reduction with liposuction:

Breasts having mostly fatty tissue can be reduced with liposuction without any scar. This is more useful in unmarried girls, where scar is undesirable. In this the extra fat is taken out with extremely fine cannula to get the desired reduction.

Duration of Procedure: Approximately 2 – 4 hrs.

Anesthesia: General

Recovery Tim: Return to work within 1 – 2 weeks. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 4 – 6 weeks.

Breast reduction gives very rewarding results with one of the highest patient satisfaction rates.
