Skin Grafting

Skin Grafting

Skin grafting is a surgical procedure used to replace or repair damaged or missing skin by transplanting healthy skin from one part of the body (donor site) to another (recipient site). It is commonly performed in cases of burns, injuries, infections, or after surgical removal of diseased tissue.

Purpose

  • Cover and protect exposed wounds
  • Promote faster healing
  • Restore skin function and appearance
  • Reduce risk of infection and fluid loss

Types of Skin Grafts

  • Split-Thickness Graft: Involves the top layers of skin; commonly used for burns and large wounds
  • Full-Thickness Graft: Includes all layers of skin; used for smaller, deeper areas requiring better cosmetic results
  • Composite Graft: Includes skin and underlying tissues for more complex reconstruction

Procedure Overview

The surgeon carefully removes healthy skin from a donor site (such as the thigh or behind the ear) and places it over the prepared wound area. The graft is then secured and allowed to integrate with the surrounding tissue for healing.

Duration of Procedure

  • 1 – 3 hours (depending on size and complexity)

Anesthesia

  • Local or general anesthesia

Recovery Time

  • Initial healing: 1 – 2 weeks
    Full recovery: several weeks

Benefits

  • Faster wound healing
  • Improved protection of underlying tissues
  • Enhanced appearance of the affected area
  • Reduced risk of complications

Important Considerations

  • Both donor and recipient sites require care
  • Proper wound care is essential for graft survival
  • Some scarring or color difference may occur
  • Follow-up visits are important
