Hypospadias
Hypospadias
Hypospadias is a congenital condition in males where the opening of the urethra (urinary opening) is located on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip. It may also be associated with a downward curvature of the penis (chordee) and an incomplete foreskin.
Purpose of Treatment
- Correct the position of the urethral opening
- Straighten the penis (if curvature is present)
- Improve normal urination
- Ensure proper functional and cosmetic outcome
Causes
The exact cause is not always known, but it occurs due to incomplete development of the urethra during fetal growth. Genetic and hormonal factors may play a role.
Types of Hypospadias
- Distal (mild): Opening near the head of the penis
- Midshaft: Opening along the shaft
- Proximal (severe): Opening near the base or scrotum
Procedure Overview
Hypospadias repair is a surgical procedure where:
- The urethra is reconstructed and brought to the tip
- Penile curvature is corrected (if present)
- The penis is reshaped for a natural appearance
This is typically performed in early childhood, but can be done later if needed.
Duration of Procedure
- 1 – 3 hours (depending on severity)
Anesthesia
- General anesthesia
Recovery Time
- Initial healing: 1 – 2 weeks
- Complete recovery: a few weeks
Benefits
- Normal urination function
- Straightened penis
- Improved cosmetic appearance
- Better long-term outcomes
